Michael
Kennedy is one of Ireland’s leading ceramic artists. His work unique
and original evokes all that is the west of Ireland from the untameable
energy of the Atlantic, to the delicate colours and forms of the wild
Burren flowers.
Michael
studied Fine Art at Crawford School of Art in cork and at the School of
Art and Design in Sligo. He completed his studies at the National College
of Art & Design in Dublin. Michael returned to Sligo in 1979 and opened
his first gallery/shop and pottery in the Market Yard.
Some
seventeen years later he opened a second gallery/shop and pottery in Gort,
CO Galway in the mythical setting of the Burren landscape. His firing
techniques draw from the traditional methods to highly specialised salt
firing and Japanese Raku firings.
It
was in Gort where he developed his highly specialised salt firing and
reduction red glazes . The Gort studio and pottery was purpose built to
combine both potteries into one business, as Michael now resides in Gort.
The pottery is located on Bolands’ lane in a beautifully restored
old stone court yard setting.
The
Irish landscape and mythology, together with a quirky sense of humour
have inspired the works of Michael Kennedy. Travel in Europe and further
afield has added to his sources of inspiration.
Every
object is sculpted and thrown by hand. The form is vested with skill and
artistry of the Artist. The work reflects the strong tones and shades
of the Irish countryside, exhibiting a richness and depth of colour. The
Ceramic Art of Michael Kennedy graces homes and galleries in Ireland and
abroad.
Michael
Kennedy has created both functional pottery and ceramic sculptures for
Irish people over the last 25 years.
